Lufkin Gives Update on Efforts To Save Downtown Dr Pepper Mural
In mid-September, while demolition crews were tearing down the old downtown site of the Angelina County jail, a Dr. Pepper mural on a previously hidden brick wall was revealed. The discovery quickly made its way onto social media, and a viral movement to preserve the mural began. City officials and engineers immediately evaluated options to save or restore this newfound piece of Lufkin history. After 6 weeks of research and study, we have some answers.

The Bad News
The overall cost analysis of preserving the mural does not paint a very positive picture (no pun intended). While the mural holds historical and sentimental value for many in the community, analysis has determined that the brick wall supporting the mural would require extensive repair and reinforcement to safely remain.
“The city has considered many options for preserving this piece of local history,” said City Manager Kevin Gee. “However, the cost of stabilizing the deteriorating wall, combined with the deteriorated condition of the nearly 100-year-old paint, makes preservation financially unviable for the City of Lufkin.”
In addition, renovating the existing structure into public uses such as a visitor center or public restroom facility is estimated to cost $750,000, which is beyond the scope of available funds.
The Good News...kind of
Angelina County, the previous owner, recently approved an amendment to its agreement with the City of Lufkin to allow the building to be retained and possibly sold, providing an opportunity for preservation.
The city is investigating options that would allow an individual or entity to acquire the building for renovation and preservation. A preservation easement or performance agreement would be required.
Now What?
It looks like it's going to take a significant amount of money, time, and effort to save the mural. Hopefully, something positive presents itself over the next few weeks. Kevin Gee anticipates that more information will be made available by the end of November.
