East Texas Severe Weather Threat
Damaging winds in excess of 60 mph and hail appear to be the main threats to residents of East Texas this afternoon and evening. Although a tornado is not out of the question for the Pineywoods, the higher probability for tornado activity should remain in Louisiana this evening and overnight.
Thursday, the Storm Prediction Center placed Deep East Texas in a 'marginal' risk area (1 out of 5) for severe storms to occur on Friday. Today, the risk area is now considered 'slight' (2 out of 5) from portions of the Brazos Valley to most of the Pineywoods.
Timing Of The Storms in East Texas
Scattered showers will increase in East Texas throughout the day on Friday; however, the risk of thunderstorms will ramp up, especially during the afternoon to evening hours. Weather models are showing a wide variance in when the strong to severe storms could occur in the Pineywoods. Some are suggesting the storms could start forming around 1 pm, while others point to strong storms lingering until before midnight. The Storm Prediction Center expects most of the thunderstorms in East Texas to happen between 2 pm and 6 pm.
