Above you can see the official state flag of Virginia. This flag and all fifty state flags were a part of program used on the online tool for many Texas elementary students called 'Pebble Go'. According to their website, students will 'travel through all U.S. states and territories to explore their geography, history, government, landmarks, and symbols.'

The problem is that the Virginia state flag depicts a woman signifying virtue standing over a defeated king. “Sic semper tyrannis” is the motto underneath that translates to 'Thus always to tyrants'. Virginia was one of the thirteen original colonies and their flag is meant to represent they will never allow a tyrannical government again. The woman depicted as Virtue has an exposed breast and that is why the State of Texas will not allow elementary students to learn about the state flag anymore.

Texas' Official Policy on Deceptions of Nudity in Elementary School Classrooms

According to Lamar CISD, the curriculum in the state must do the following.

Educationally suitable library materials must be

  • 1) age appropriate, considering the relevant student populations ability/reading level, social and emotional development and interest
  • 2) satisfy the following educational standard and goals

Those standards and goals mentioned in number 2 above breaks down into 12 different rules. Rule 10 specifically mentions 'No material in elementary school libraries shall include visual depictions or illustrations of frontal nudity.'

Since this flag has an exposed breast, the state of Texas will not be showing it any longer as a part of their curriculum. The class is meant for third to fifth graders to learn about states throughout the country.
