Texas Tipping Habits Revealed — Are You More Generous Than Most?

A new study revealed where Texans rank among the most generous tippers in the United States.

Most Agree: Tipping Has Gone Too Far

I’m one of those people who believe tipping has gotten out of control. In fact, I wrote a piece about it a couple of months ago. 90% of respondents to a survey by the financial website WalletHub agree with me.

Now, I need to make it clear that I’m all for tipping waitstaff, delivery drivers, hairdressers, and other service providers that you would traditionally tip. But I don’t feel like I should have to tip the person who grabs me a beer from a cooler at a baseball game – but I still do it. Yep, that tipping prompt guilt-trips me into it every time. 

I know it’s debatable, but I feel like 20% is a damn good tip. It’s the rule of thumb I use every time I want to throw the server (or whoever) a little extra money for their services. And I always tip, regardless of whether the service was great or not-so-great.

Data Breakdown: What Texans Actually Tip

According to Toast’s Q1 2025 Restaurant Trends Report, I tip a little more than the average Texan. Toast users in Texas tip an average of 18.7%. That’s not the worst average tip in the country, but it’s not the best, either. 

But I will say that if I still worked in the service industry, I would be a-okay with an 18.7% tip.
