Horse Trots Down Texas Highway Outside Of Lufkin
If you had the pleasure of traveling on Highway 69 South of Lufkin between FM 841 and FM 326 on Monday, July 29 2024 you might not have believed your eyes. A riderless horse was trotting down the road leaving Huntington and heading to Lufkin.
Huntington Police Department gave chase to the chestnut or "bay" horse, directing traffic away from the loose animal. There are many horses here in Deep East Texas, but you don't usually see them on the open road.
Hitting a 1,000lb horse at highway speeds would likely be a fatal collision for everyone involved. Thanks to the Huntington Police and the Angelina County Sheriff's Office for wrangling this unusual highway traveler and getting it out of the road quickly.
These Are The Moments That Living In The Country Is All About
Officers had to get out of their patrol cars and do their best to corral the animal. A horse can gallop at around 20-30 miles an hour, so you can imagine the fun they were having out in the sun on that hot asphalt.
Everyone banded together to make sure the horse and all involved were safe. Luckily this animal is now safe and at home with the owner after a brief stay with the Angelina County Sheriff's Department.
According to BHS.ork.uk if you see a horse on the road you should do the following:
- Slow down to a maximum of 10mph
- Be patient, do not honk or rev your engine
- Pass the horse wide and slow
- Drive slowly away
