The weather has been wild and somewhat unpredictable in Amarillo, Texas, and the Texas panhandle this year. From risks of wildfire to snow squalls, we've seen it all. This week, though, it seems that a little relief has finally come to the area.

A Texas Panhandle County Reverses Course On Burn Ban

The burn ban in Randall County was lifted. This is excellent news as we get into grilling and camping season. The order was officially signed on April 8, ending the ban that had gone into effect in February.

According to the order that was signed earlier this week, the conditions that created a need for a burn ban have changed. I wouldn't go crazy; the wind is still insane here, but it's nice to know that if the wind isn't blowing, I won't get in trouble for using the firepit I just put in my backyard.

Several Texas Panhandle Counties Still Under Active Burn Bans

Even though Randall County has removed its ban, there are still several counties with one in place. If you look at the interactive map of active burn bans on the Texas A&M Forest Service website, you'll see a lot more counties with a ban than without one.

It would be easier to list the counties that don't have a burn ban in place. Those counties are:

  • Gray
  • Ochilltree
  • Hansford
  • Hall

For Amarillo residents, if you're on the Potter County side of town, you're still in a burn ban. That ban went into effect on March 25 and has only been active for 16 of the 90 days. If nothing changes, there's still a lot of time left before the ban gets lifted.

Hopefully, we'll see more precipitation in the area, and more of these bans will get lifted as we get closer to summer. The weather is warming up, and it would be nice to spend time outside at the grill, the firepit, and camping.
