REPORT: Lufkin Man Shoots Himself Following Police Pursuit
Officers with the Lufkin Police Department continue to be at a scene on Melvin Avenue this evening in which a pursuit suspect allegedly shot himself and was taken to a local hospital Tuesday afternoon.
Melvin Avenue intersects North Timberland Drive, just across the road from Big's Convenience Store.
The suspect is believed to have been involved in a shooting earlier today that is being investigated by the Angelina County Sheriff’s Office. ACSO issued a “be on the lookout” to local law enforcement for a black Dodge Challenger in connection to the shooting.
A Lufkin officer was patrolling when he spotted a vehicle matching the suspect vehicle with the correct license plate around 3:45 p.m. He attempted to stop the vehicle and a high-speed pursuit ensued for several minutes.
The pursuit ended when the suspect fled the vehicle on foot and ran into a home in the 100 block of Melvin Avenue.
Lufkin Police Officers were met at the door of the home by residents who told them the suspect was in the backyard and had shot himself. Officers rendered first aid until paramedics arrived and transported the suspect to a local hospital.
Due to the nature of the incident, a Texas Ranger has been contacted and is responding to the scene.
No other information was available concerning the earlier shooting being investigated by the Angelina County Sheriff's Office.
That is all the information released at this time by the Lufkin Police Department. We will pass along more updates once details are released.
