Lufkin High School has a new head football coach and athletic director

In a Thursday morning press release, Lufkin Independent School District officials revealed that Carl Abseck will be taking over as the new Panther Athletic Director and Head Football Coach. The announcement was made at a special meeting of the Board of Trustees of Lufkin ISD.

On December 3, former Lufkin Athletic Director/Head Football Coach, Todd Quick announced his retirement and a search for a replacement was started.

According to the press release, Coach Abseck started his coaching career at Wichita Falls High School. Eight years later, he was hired by Cedar Park. Most recently, Abseck is credited with rebuilding and improving the overall athletic program at Barber's Hill.

Some of his credits include being named Coach of the Year in 2015, as well as being a five-time regional semi-finalist, three-time quarterfinalist, one-time state semi-finalist, two-time state finalist, and two-time state champion. His overall record as a head coach is 102-27, with a playoff record of 22-9.

The LISD press release goes on to mention that Coach Abseck builds vertically and horizontally aligned programs emphasizing middle school work to build championship programs. His many references say that he is a man of "integrity, values, compassion and empathy, and truly values all students."

Barber's Hill competes with Lufkin in the same football district. The Panthers won their 2024 match-up on the way to a district championship. Barber's Hill was bi-district champs in 2024 before falling to La Porte in the area round.
